I was at the mall the other day, treating myself, when I came upon a questionable topic. I was in forever 21, when I saw a plain grey beanie that was nine dollars. I was startled to see how much it was because first, it was a plain grey beanie, and second, I had seen the exact same beanie in the men’s section; the only difference was that the men’s was two for 12 dollars. Every woman would not mind a bargain similar to the one men are getting in their everyday lives. Everything comes down to one main focus, in our society, gender based pricing occurs often.

According to “Merriam Webster” the definition of gender based pricing or also known as gender based discrimination is when companies or services charge different rates for no other reason than solely based on a person’s gender. So basically if one group is willing to pay more than another, charging them more makes business sense. However, it is not fun being that other group that is technically unwillingly to paying more but will to get what they want. This gender based discrimination can be noticed at your own convenience store. For example, men pay $2.99 and women pay $4.69 for the same brand of deodorant. Another example is women pay $15.00 and men pay $6.99 for the same brand of face lotion, talk about a bargain.

Some cities and states have seen this discrimination as a problem and have made laws requiring businesses to limit or ban gender pricing. One of the first states to ban gender pricing was California in 1996. However, there are still many businesses and companies that gender base their pricing. A study in California discovered that women spend about $1,351 more in additional cost annually, and that ends up to about $151 billion a year.

“People don’t really stop and think about it, so when you are forced to stop and think about it, you realize how big of a problem it is, or could be, or has the potential to be, so I think we would have to draw more attention to it in order to try to fix this problem”, senior Emerson Andelt said.
