I am always hearing from older people, not necessarily “old” people, but people out of high school and college, that people our age have no manners and aren’t chivalrous. Chivalry is defined as “the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, especially courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak.” This translates into our society today as doing simple things like holding the door for someone and helping a person with something, even if they don’t ask for help. Some seem to see these acts as old-fashioned and out-dated, mostly in the dating aspect of chivalry, but to be brutally honest, I, and probably many other girls, would rather date someone who opens the door for us, rather than just flinging it open and expecting us to catch it on our way in.

Something else that seems to have theoretically “died” is going to the door to pick up a girl for a date. Most people just text them saying, “hey, I’m here” or even worse, just saying, “here”. Seriously guys, have some common courtesy, get up off of your lazy butt, and go get her. I guarantee doing a small gesture like that will make her like you even more than she already does. A lot of chivalrous acts are generally related to dating, but not all of them. One thing that used to be common courtesy was holding the door for the person after you. It really isn’t that hard to just stand there and hold the door for someone, and someone’s day can seriously be changed by this small act of chivalry and kindness. That’s really all chivalry is, kindness.

I understand that some people will argue and say that chivalry isn’t totally dead, and I agree with that, but, the vast majority of people aren’t chivalrous anymore. I also get that chivalry seems to always be the responsibility of the guy, but girls should really be chivalrous as well. Just hold the door for the person behind you, no matter if you are a girl or a boy. Chivalry may not be completely dead, this is true, but, the way chivalry used to be is long gone. So let’s try and evolve chivalry and be a little more courteous to each other.
