From the beginning, the boys knew that losing wasn’t an option and that hard work and dedication was a must. Last year ended in disappointment when losing at sub-state against Norris, and though tears were shed, the boys quickly got back up. They used the off season to get faster, stronger, and to run longer. “We have had a definite push in the off-season and preseason to better ourselves off the field, in the weight room, and classroom,” head coach Derek Spence said.

The journey didn’t just start the day of the first practice, but in the days work is put in before the season. This year will be no different on how much work was put in. Besides being teammates, the boys become “brothers”. The team quote is a reflection of this exactly.“I am my brother’s keeper” was placed on the back of the team shirts to demonstrate that they are family, rather than just a team. Not only are they a family, but they also became part of the community. During the fall, they raked leaves, and shooting two birds with one stone, the players got in strength conditioning while helping out their neighbors and friends.

The snow didn’t stop the team, they got together during the winter to clean driveways. Work didn’t stop after that, when they returned to school after Christmas break, they began the daily required conditioning. Though last year’s seniors took the team far, every year, the team strives do even better. Having to pass various tests in agility and speed, the players pushed themselves to earn a place on the varsity team. Because it is such a competitive sport and so many students go out, there

Because it is such a competitive sport and so many students go out, three teams were created: the varsity team, JV red, and JV blue. Two JV teams were created to provide every player with equal playing time during games. They alternate games, so they have about the same playing time. “I feel like the team put great effort and communicated well during our first game, which led us to our first victory,” Nick Keola, a member of the JV red team, said. Those who made it to the varsity team, but are also part of a JV team are considered bubbles. They are pushed by the varsity players, while at the same time, they are pushing the other JV players.

“It’s a teach-learn situation, we get to teach the younger ones, but learn from the older ones,” Jorge Perez, bubble player, said. Having a system as such helps the athletes get competitive and improve their skills. Seniors tend to be the leaders of the team, because they have the most experience and knowledge. This year there were four captains selected to provide the team with the right  leadership. Isaias Lopez, Hunter Bradley, Carlos Dominguez, and Jesus Rodriguez were selected by the coaches. The team was led into victory on their first game vs. Nebraska City with a score of 2-0. Entering the Columbus tournament confident, they fought for the win but were defeated with a score of 3-2. Though they lost that battle, they only looked forward and won their next two games. Now they currently have a 3-1 season.

“Our team chemistry is getting better, we’re also growing as a team, and I believe we can be the first to go to state,” Hunter Bradley, team captain said. Though there are still many more games before state, the team continues to work with dedication to be the first to make it to the end.
