Over time, the Crete’s girls soccer team has not had the outcomes they wished for in regards to their wins. Each year the team seems to grow in numbers, but this year there seemed to be a decrease in girls trying out, but the team continues to push forward with the girls they have. The girls have played against very difficult teams, that over the years keep improving more and more. The team has faced Columbus Scotus, Lakeview, Nebraska City, and Beatrice so far in the season.

They began the season facing off with Nebraska City where they lost 7-0 with two goals scored in the first half, and five scored in the second half. The girls started off strong, but two goals were let in, and after a long hard fight the team ended up losing. “ I believe we could have won, but sadly many girls entered with a mentality that we will always lose,” freshman Katelyn Hoesche said.

After losing 7-0 against Nebraska City the team played in an annual Columbus tournament where Crete faces teams from all over Columbus. The team has played at this tournament for multiple years and every year faces the same outcome of losing and placing last. “We face the best teams in the state, and each year it gets harder. We seem to know our destiny before even playing,” sophomore Bryant Estrada said. Teams like Columbus have grown up playing soccer in leagues around their town, but Crete has no program for girls to play soccer until high school. This brings the problem when facing hard teams that recruit the best girls, our team is one step behind. After preparing for the games, they headed to Columbus and lost both games against Scotus and Lakeview 10-0 earning the mercy rule. “We played three back to back games, and it caught up with us, but we did see a large improvement,” Estrada said.

With having played three games, and facing tough loses, the team moved forward and prepared to play against Beatrice where they lost 6-0 making their overall record 0-4. “We played as best as we could, but we made mistakes and that cost us the win,” senior Jasmine Mejia said.

After having trained to improve, the girls prepare to face Conestoga with hopes of achieving their first win. “ We are not focused so much on the wins and losses, but to build and improve as a team and later expect those wins to come,” Head Coach Chelsea Thiem said. Off season the girls assisted a skills camp where they hoped to better their skills, and now coaches hope they are put into play. With teams like Columbus Scotus, the girls know now how good other teams are and are ready to push forward and succeed.
