The 2016-2017 Crete Boys Basketball season has ended with superior success. The team played three district rounds to qualify for state. For their first district game, the Cardinals went up against Schuyler, beating them 17-6. Schuyler was seeded at 6th, while Crete was placed at 3rd, so the win was no surprise. Following Schuyler’s defeat, Crete went head to head with the #2 seed, Columbus. It was certainly a tough game, but the Cardinals pulled through with a 12-10 win, taking them to the final round of districts. Coach David Novak said following the game, “We’ve put in a lot of hard work this season, and it really all comes down to tomorrow when we play Norris. It’ll be a big game and I’m excited to see what they bring to the table.”

The night following the Columbus game, February 28th, Crete played the Norris Titans in the Class B-3 District Finals. Cardinal fans put on a white out theme for that game, while the Titans had their fans wearing red, white, and blue to support their U.S.A theme. The game was played at Lincoln High, and the gym was most definitely packed. Crete fans chanted “Go big red!” alongside our cheerleaders as the players hustled their way through the game. The atmosphere was booming with spirit from both schools, but as it turns out, the Cardinals came to win and that’s exactly what they did. Crete boys basketball defeated the Norris Titans with a score of 49-47, making them your Class B-3 2017 District Champions, as well as qualifying them for the state tournament. When the buzzer sounded signifying the game had officially ended, Crete fans rushed onto the court ready to congratulate their players. There was jumping, screaming, and hooraying from everyone in the gym. And it was found difficult not to feel a bit sentimental while you watched seniors Rhett Harms and Wyatt Bodfield cut down their District Championship nets. Senior Wyatt Bodfield had said, “Winning districts for the first time in my high school career has got to be the best feeling ever; I’m on top of the world right now. I’m going to miss playing with these guys so much, they’re my second family. Roll Cards!” The excitement Bodfield expressed was intense, proving he was more than ready to carry that same intensity onto the state tournament.

For the Cardinals, their first state game was held on March 9th, at 7:30 pm at the Bob Devaney center. Crete went up against Scottsbluff. Cardinal fans cheered on their players with all their might, but sadly, Crete lost 53-42 against Scottsbluff, knocking them out of the state tournament. Scottsbluff went on to play in the championship, losing against Gretna. Coach David Novak said, “Our goal this season was to make it to state and that’s exactly what we did. This was my best and most difficult year coaching and I really, truly am proud of these kids.” David Novak is most definitely not the only one proud; as the whole town will forever remember the 2016-2017 boys basketball season with a sense of pride.
