Another season of boys soccer has come to a close. The Crete Men’s Soccer team has been working diligently since January to make their 2017 season the best one yet. This spring season, the men’s soccer team had the best winning record out of all of our spring sports. Assistant Coach Michael Ziola says, “We had a really good group of boys out this season. The season didn’t end exactly the way we wanted it to but all in all, we progressed so far and that’s what counts.” The team ended their season having won 11 games, and losing 6.

Heading into districts, the team had one thing on their mind: going all the way to state. The goal most definitely seemed feasible. In the first round, Crete Soccer faced Lincoln Lutheran, winning 4-1. Winning this led them to face the Norris Titans in their last round of districts. Spirits were high and the adrenaline was pumping as the Cardinals were gearing up to face the Titans. Although the Cardinals put up a hard fight, they ended up losing to Norris 1-0. Normally, this would’ve knocked them out of the competition for good. Thankfully though, the team was given a wildcard, which let them continue on to substate. At their substate game, Crete went up against Schuyler for the third time this season. Sadly though, the team lost to Schuyler 1-0, ending the season. Junior Jorge Perez said, “Not making it to state was really sad for everyone on the team because we wanted it so bad. We also really wanted to beat Norris because we were unable to beat the last year but thankfully we got a wild card. Hopefully, things turn out better for us next season and we’ll be able to make it to state.” Although boys soccer was unable to make it to state, their winning record and improvement of skills made this season another positive one for Crete Soccer.
