An Election or an Embarrassment?

This year’s presidential debates have definitely been one for the books, or maybe the funnies in a newspaper. The running candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have been competing for the role as America’s president for almost a year. Sometimes it still seems as if the election has gotten nowhere. The two candidates are like a mother and a father fighting and as a result, the people of America are their children who just want to move to grandmas’. The past two debates were held on September 26 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York and on Sunday, October 9 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The third debate took place on Wednesday, October 19, at Nevada’s UNLV campus. During the three debates Trump and Clinton went back and forth with insults. Many were about how the other candidate was planning on controlling the country. Sometime during the 90 minute sessions Trump refers to Clinton as “the devil”.

Not much later the poles were swinging with comments about how Trump is demeaning to women. Alicia Machado, who won the Miss Universe pageant in 1996, representing Venezuela, while Trump owned the Miss Universe pageant (1996 until 2015). One of the worst things he’s said was about a woman in a beauty contest,” Clinton said. “He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them. And he called this woman ‘Miss Piggy.’ Then he called her ‘Miss Housekeeping,’ because she’s Latina.” Trump criticized Machado for gaining weight and invited the media to watch her exercise. Trump has recently been accused of sexual assault of nine women, but Donald Trump stated in the third presidential debate of 2016, “There’s never been anybody in the history of politics in this nation that’s been so abusive to women. So you can say it any way you want to say it, Bill Clinton was abusive to women,” Trump said, as the former president sat in the audience.” Hillary Clinton attacked those same women and attacked them viciously. Four of them are here tonight.” This statement in particular makes Trump look like a exploiting person who doesn’t care about anyone else’s feelings, which is not something new.
On the flip side, Clinton is no saint either. In the past she has been investigated for being accused of having a private email while she was and is in office as Secretary of State. This accusation was proven true. For Trump supporters this incident has been brought up the most, over social media and Sunday dinners with family. The most controversial of the crime was that Hillary denied owning the email account, which Trump will not let go. The former Secretary of State recently admitted to owning the email account, but the country has still not moved on from how she lied for the past few years.

The presidential debate of 2016 is now over. Some of the American people still can not grasp what is happening to our country. Is this what our beloved country has come to? Are these really the people who we would like to govern our country. So, was this an election or an embarrassment?
